Matt Kaiser to Co-Chair Panel on Threats to Criminal Defense Lawyers at the 27th Annual Transnational Crime Conference
Matt Kaiser will co-chair a panel at the 27th Annual Transnational Crime Conference, taking place in Santiago, Chile from May 14 to 16, 2025. The event will gather leading practitioners from around the world to discuss emerging challenges in the global fight against transnational crime.
On Friday, May 16, Matt will help lead a session titled “Lawyers Being Prosecuted for Being Lawyers or, More Specifically, for Being Defense Lawyers.” This panel will address the growing threats faced by criminal defense attorneys worldwide — from legislation undermining their independence and weakening attorney-client privilege, to disciplinary actions and even criminal prosecution for their work defending clients.
Joined by Sabine ten Doesschate (Sjöcrona van Stigt, Netherlands), Shaul Brazil (BCL Solicitors, England), Juliana Miranda (Miranda Arcentales Advogados, Brazil), and Stefanie Schott (Kipper Durth Schott Rechtsanwälte PartGmbB, Germany), Matt and the panel will explore how these trends endanger the future of criminal defense law and the rule of law itself.
