Kaiser PLLC Partners Matt Kaiser and Bill Zapf to Teach Ethics CLE for Criminal Defense Attorneys
Kaiser PLLC partners Matt Kaiser and Bill Zapf will serve as faculty for an upcoming Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program hosted by the D.C. Bar: “Ethics and Criminal Defense 2025.”
This well-regarded course explores some of the complex ethical challenges facing criminal defense attorneys today. Drawing on their experience in both white-collar criminal defense and counseling lawyers on legal ethics matters, Matt and Bill will guide participants through ethical dilemmas criminal defense attorneys are likely to face and provide practical strategies for resolving them.
Key topics include:
• Flat fees post-In re Mance – ethical compliance and structuring agreements
• Third-party payments – maintaining client loyalty and avoiding conflicts
• Joint representations – identifying and addressing potential conflicts
• Perjury – obligations when a client or witness may give false testimony
• Withdrawal – navigating termination of representation ethically
• Post-conviction relief – responding to ineffective assistance allegations
“Ethics questions in criminal defense rarely come with easy answers,” said Bill Zapf, partner at Kaiser PLLC. “This program is designed to help lawyers think critically and practically about the responsibilities they face in some of the more difficult moments of representation.”
While designed for criminal defense practitioners, the course offers valuable insights for all attorneys interested in sharpening their understanding of professional responsibility.
