Kaiser PLLC Participates in IBA Transnational Crime Conference in Santiago

Kaiser PLLC attorneys Amelia Schmidt and Matt Kaiser joined leading criminal defense practitioners from around the world at the 27th Annual International Bar Association (IBA) Transnational Crime Conference, held May 14–16 in Santiago, Chile.

Recognized as one of the premier global events in the field of transnational criminal law, the conference brought together more than 100 attorneys from 26 countries to explore key trends in cross-border enforcement and legal challenges. This year’s topics included global anti-corruption efforts, the regulation of corporate supply chains, and the increasing use of sports investigations in international crime probes.

Amelia Schmidt, Counsel at Kaiser PLLC, attended sessions focused on the practical implications of transnational investigations and the professional pressures faced by lawyers handling politically charged matters.

“Participating in this conference was a meaningful opportunity to connect with other lawyers who understand the ethical and strategic complexities that come with high-stakes international defense work,” Schmidt said. “There’s real value in building global relationships to better protect our clients’ rights—no matter the jurisdiction.”

Firm partner Matt Kaiser, a co-chair of the IBA Criminal Law Committee, also spoke on a panel addressing threats to the independence of the defense bar. The discussion focused on the growing use of criminal and disciplinary proceedings against defense lawyers and broader legislative efforts that may undermine the role of counsel in politically sensitive cases.

“Events like this are a reminder that the rule of law depends on an independent and fearless defense bar,” Matt said. “We are stronger when we stand together—across borders—to defend that principle.”

Kaiser PLLC is proud to support the work of the IBA and remains committed to principled, strategic advocacy in high-stakes matters—both in the United States and across borders.
