Kaiser Attorneys Contribute to ABA Year in Review on Sanctions and Export Controls
Kaiser PLLC is proud to announce that attorneys Amelia Schmidt and Noah Brozinsky co-authored a section of the American Bar Association’s Export Controls & Economic Sanctions – Legal Developments Year in Review: 2024.
Each year, this highly regarded publication provides a comprehensive overview of key regulatory developments, enforcement actions, and trends shaping the global trade environment. It is a go-to resource for practitioners, compliance officers, and policymakers seeking to stay informed on the evolving sanctions and export control landscape.
Amelia and Noah’s contribution focused on the criminal enforcement cases brought by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2024. These cases reflect the government’s continued focus on international security, particularly with respect to sanctions evasion, illicit technology transfers, and schemes designed to conceal the ultimate destination of restricted goods. Among the highlights:
- Russia-related enforcement – DOJ pursued cases where individuals attempted to send semiconductors and sensitive technology to Russia through third countries such as Hong Kong and Uzbekistan, underscoring the government’s scrutiny of supply chains and transshipment routes.
- Iran-focused cases – Enforcement included charges involving money laundering through gift cards, the attempted export of aircraft components, and several large-scale schemes to traffic Iranian oil to buyers abroad. These actions illustrate the broad range of strategies used to enforce sanctions on Iran.
- China-linked activity – DOJ charged multiple Chinese nationals with using front companies to export electronic components ultimately intended for Iranian military drones, highlighting how enforcement can reach beyond U.S. borders to target complex international networks.
Their analysis captured the breadth of enforcement activity and underscored the increasing coordination among U.S. agencies in investigating and prosecuting sanctions and export control violations.
By contributing to this national publication, Amelia and Noah demonstrate both their depth of experience in navigating complex international matters and their commitment to thought leadership in this critical area of law. Their insights highlight how legal practitioners can help clients anticipate risks, respond effectively to government investigations, and maintain compliance in a challenging global environment.
At Kaiser PLLC, we are proud of Amelia and Noah’s recognition on this important stage and of the continued role our attorneys play in shaping the dialogue around sanctions, export controls, and international law.
