Kaiser PLLC to Lead IBA Session on Legal Privilege at the Intersection of Civil and Criminal Disputes
Kaiser PLLC partner Matt Kaiser will serve as a session chair at the International Bar Association’s (IBA) upcoming conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, When litigation meets crime, where he will help lead a featured program examining the evolving boundaries of legal privilege in complex, multi-forum disputes. The session, Legal privilege at the intersection between civil and criminal disputes, will take place on Friday, January 30, from 9:30–10:45 a.m., and is jointly organized by the IBA Business Crime, Criminal Law, and Litigation Committees.
As regulatory scrutiny intensifies and parallel civil, criminal, and enforcement proceedings become more common, questions surrounding the scope and preservation of legal privilege have taken on heightened importance. The session will bring together leading practitioners from Europe, Latin America, and the United States to explore how disclosure obligations, investigative demands, and cross-border considerations are reshaping traditional privilege doctrines in white-collar and regulatory matters.
Matt, a Co-Chair of the IBA Criminal Law Committee, will help guide the discussion alongside Cara Cameron (Woods, Montréal) which will focus on strategic considerations for lawyers advising clients whose matters span multiple legal regimes. Topics will include best practices for preserving privilege, managing internal investigations, and navigating situations where civil and criminal exposure intersect.
The panel will feature speakers Trevor Mascarenhas (PCB Byrne, London), Juan Palomino Segura (Pérez-Llorca, Madrid), Juliana Sa de Miranda (Miranda Arcentales, São Paulo), and Johanna Christine Wirth (Hengeler Mueller, Berlin), offering comparative perspectives on privilege across jurisdictions.
